Introducing A Child To Your New Relationship
First Impressions Count

By , About.com Guide

No one questions whether introducing your children to a new romantic interest is a stressful event. Of course it is! But, for single parents, planning how, when, and where you set up the initial meeting can make the difference in it being a good first impression for all involved.

What should you keep in mind?

* Later is better than sooner.[/br] Make sure that all parties involved are ready for the introductions. Make sure your children are comfortable, and that your new person doesn't feel pushed into the situation.

* Shorter is better than longer. Consider something simple like an outing to the park or lunch. A few hours is probably the most time you should plan on for a first experience.

* Be prepared for less-than-perfect behavior. Don't expect angelic behavior and be prepared for aloof or whiny reactions. If you think through some possible behaviors and solutions, you'll be better prepared to handle the situation.

* Keep your expectations realistic. As much as you'd like for it to happen, your children are not going to immediately bond and become best friends. Remember, all relationships take time.
