National Recess Week is Part of Campaign to Rescue Recess

Sunday September 17, 2006
Isn't it ironic how there is all sorts of emphasis today on children's health, sports safety and fitness (and rightfully so), yet good ol' recess is being phased out by many schools across the country? Proponents of recess argue that playtime can be just as vital as learning time yet unstructured free play, such as just good ol' running around, is on its way out? National Recess Week is part of Cartoon Network's national campaign and is being celebrated Sept. 18-22.

I totally agress with outside time. However, at our school they are not allowed to play outside unless the finish there lunch. So they get 1/2 hr for lunch and if they eat in 15 min. they get to go out for 15 min. I don’t agree with it.

I think it’s a shame that recess is taken away from our children. they sit all day long, then come home, sit again to do homework, sit again to eat dinner, they may have a half hour to play each night before it’s time to get cleaned up for bed. Which I find is not enough time to let loose. I remember even in 7th and 8th grade when i was in school getting a break to go outside for fresh air everyday. Now my kids are down to 15 mins for recess, then once they hit fourth grade recess is a taken away. Then we are hit with no more parents allowed to send in cupcakes or treats for a birthday at school because of the increase of childhood obiesity. What about the fact that recess is taken away, and maybe the reason it is more now then past years because we use to have 45 min recess in Elementary school to burn off what we ate at school.
