Raising Kids: Keep It Cool and In Perspective

Experts Advise: Love and Accept Your Kids' Individuality

By Robin McClure, About.com

Sure, raising kids is a tough job. And, nowadays, according to everything you read and hear, the job is more challenging than ever before. But, sometimes well-meaning parents really do forget the perspective of a child and think things are worse than they really are. What are some good ways to keep things in perspective? Here are some tips.

  • Things really could be worse! Parents should realize that many of the dark moments that come with child-raising throughout the years are normal and natural, and that stages such as the terrible-twos or sullen-preteens will pass. The key is to love your children at each stage of their lives and be open-minded to whatever lies ahead!

  • Don't over-fret the small stuff. So, your daughter hates pink or your son has a disdain for all organized sports. That's okay. They have the right to opinions and also to not expect that they must live their lives to please you. So, what color does your daughter like and what are your son's interests? Fixate on their interests and likes and not on their dislikes.

  • Remember the analogy of a glass being half-full vs. half empty, and consider yourself the pitcher! In other words, you can make their lives enriched and full through your positive additions.

  • Avoid the temptation to compare and contrast. Guess what? Your child is different! He/she is unique and you should behold that individuality! Avoid comparison wars with other parents, even innocent ones that create seeds of doubt with parents. So, Jack can write his name before Jonathan or Susie has mastered a running round-off while your Tiffany is still working on a cartwheel. So what! And, if it your son or daughter who is the super star, don't brag. Just don't! Everyone will be appreciative of it, including your own kids.

  • Bottom line? Keep it in perspective. If your kids are well-adjusted, mostly-happy, and talk to you at least through occasional grunts or nods, then you're doing okay! Just keep it all in perspective!
