Here are some quick tips to look for when choosing your child's backpack this year:
- Consider the size and age of your child when starting the process. There are toddler-sized "mini" backpacks, tailored for kids who go to daycare. Remember that there is no such thing as "one size fits all" when picking a backpack for your child.
- Choose the style that works best for your kid. Today's options have never been greater, with slings and messenger-style bags as options to a traditional backpack. These types of designs are typically better suited to older kids vs. younger ones.
- Keep comfort as a priority. Look for contoured and padded shoulder straps, a padded back or one with mesh fabric to lessen the "sweat factor," and for straps on the sides to adjust and tighten a backpack as needed.
- Check features and make sure you get what you really need. If your child is supposed to bring a water bottle to daycare or school every day, be sure there is a sufficient side pocket that allows a normal-size water bottle to be placed within the space without falling out. Multiple pockets may or may not be needed, depending on your child's age, but make sure zippers work well and don't stick.
- Look for durable, colorfast and waterproof designs. Cute cotton styles may work for young kids, but will often not last a full season with school-aged children. Reflective trim can be another plus for parents.
