Quick and Easy Project for Flower Fun!
Create a Kid-Friendly Flower Bouquet

By Robin McClure, About.com

Whether it's for springtime fun, Mother's Day, birthday, any special occasion, or just as a kid-friendly science experiment, here is a flower project that young kids will enjoy!

Simply start with some white or light-colored flowers (carnations, daisies and roses work best). If none are available in your garden, you can typically pick some inexpensively at a local grocery store or florist. Next, show your tots how to color water using food coloring, and let them pick desired colors. Be sure to use enough water to richly tint the water. Once the colored solution is prepared, pour it into clear-colored cups or vases. Cut stems to fit the vase (be sure to cut at least 2-3 inches off the bottom of each stem, if possible). Then, simply set them into the colored water solution and let kids watch to see what happens over a period of a day or two.

Fresh flowers will draw the water up through their stems (much like a straw). When the water reaches the petals, it evaporates through pours, leaving behind the dye. Over time, the tips of the petals will become brightly colored.

Kids will enjoy creating holiday-themed flowers, such as green for St. Patrick's Day; red, white and blue for 4th of July; orange for Halloween; or pastel colors for Easter. In addition, this makes a great gift for a teacher or grandparent (simply find out the recipient's favorite color and let your tot "make" a custom-created bouquet)!
