Fall offers all sorts of fun and entertaining holiday actvities for kids. Parents and providers alike should look over this list of events, key dates and lesson plan ideas when planning seasonal fun and enrichment ideas.
New School Year (For Pre-Schoolers As Well As School-Aged Kids)
While some areas may begin school as early as mid-August, most folks think of September as "back to school" month. Along with fall's foliage is the rite of school preparations, complete with new backpacks and school supplies, new friendships, homework, and the familiar yellow school buses.
Holidays and Special Days
Even young pre-schoolers can start learning about holidays and special days through introductions of why the day is important, the history, and perhaps a special book, craft or lesson that helps instill the message.
October: Fire Safety Month
Whether it's a visit to the local fire station or learning to "stop, drop and roll," kids over 1 year of age are old enough to start learning the basics of fire safety. Holidays also spark increased risks through candles lit for decorations or ambiance and outlets becoming overloaded, and kids can never be too aware any time of the year.
Halloween
It can be spooky and creepy or festive orange-and-black fun, but kids of all ages love Halloween! If nothing else, the event is a great excuse for dressing up and letting imaginations run wild!
Election Day
Whether it's a major Presidential Election Year or a season of local elections, children can be taught the importance of elections through participation and even casting votes on their own picks (activity of the day, what to have for lunch, and who they think should be America's next top leader). Educate early and future voters can be encouraged.
Thanksgiving
Beyond turkeys, Pilgrams and the first Thanksgiving, how can parents and providers help instill the spirit of giving thanks?
Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa & New Year
'Tis the season to eat, buy, party, create, socialize, and have fun, fun, fun! Winter doesn't arrive until late December, so you''ll most likely be thinking about these holidays while it's still officially Fall!
Parent and Child Care Provider Partnerships and Activities Over Breaks
How can providers and parents help each other enrich the child care experience and what can each do over breaks from the routine? Oh, where to start!
