Answer: Fifth Disease is a contagious viral illness commonly spread among children, especially in close childcare settings. Adults can also get the illness. It is also referred to as "slapped cheek disease" because of the distinctive rash some affected individuals develop.
Fifth Disease is caused by a the human parovirus B19. It is spread mostly by coughs and sneezes. Symptoms develop 4-14 days after exposure to the virus. Initial symptoms often resemble a mild case of the flu, sometimes followed by a bright red rash on the face, and possibly later a blotchy rash on the body. The rash may become more noticeable with exposure to sunlight, heat, or even stress.
Treatment for most individuals includes rest and possibly a pain reliever in case of body aches or skin sensitivities. Once the rash appears, the person is usually no longer contagious. As with any health concern or issue, children should be seen by their family's pediatrician for a full evaluation.
