Prevention The Key Against West Nile Virus
-
1. Avoid mosquito bites. Easier said than done, you say? Well, not necessarily. Be sure to apply insect repellent containing DEET. Alert organizers of children's outdoor activities (such as camp or outdoor church programs) by providing information about WNV and protection ideas.
2. Mosquito-proof your home and area. Mosquitos lay their eggs in standing water, so drain any standing water. If possible, bring your pets' water indoors during peak WNV months. Be sure your area is properly drained. Install or repair screens, and examine your house for any easy access points that invite these unwanted insects to come inside.
3. Support your community in reducing mosquito infestation. Check with local authorities to see if there is an organized mosquito control program in your area. Report dead birds to authorities. Encourage municipalities to publish information and spread timely news through neighborhood groups, community web sites, school districts, and other medium possible. Consider organizing a clean up day, and pitch in to help older residents or those with disabilities
