Recent Health Evaluations A Good Idea Before Camp

By Robin McClure, About.com

  • Many camps require a recent health evaluation signed by a doctor before a child is admitted to camp. This evaluation should include any allergies, illnesses, health history including any previous broken bones or other orthopedic concerns, physical fitness capabilities and limitations, and overall health condition. If the camp doesn't, or even if the activities are just an extension of the child's regular daycare program, parents should consider having one conducted anyway and provide a copy to the camp. Even if a camp does not require an immunization record, parents should consider making a copy of their child's and providing one any way.

  • What is the group's practice for hydration? It's fine that camps ask parents to pack a lunch and bring a drink. But, if kids are outdoors, those drinks may quickly become consumed. Is water or extra drinks available at all times for kids? Is there shade available and ample rest times? Also ask how lunch boxes are transported to ensure your child eats food that cannot become spoiled. Some camps refrigerate a child's lunch; others don't and ask parents to pack lunches with ice packs.

  • According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, illnesses that commonly affect camp life and which require intervention include the following:

    • Upper respiratory tract infections
    • Vomiting and diarrhea
    • Impetigo and fungal skin infections
    • Asthma and allergy
    • Ear infections
    • Streptococcal pharyngitis and sore throat
    • Lice and scabies
    • Conjunctivitis (pinkeye)
    • Poison ivy and poison oak
    • Sunburn and heat-related illness
