Acanthosis Nigricans

By Robin McClure, About.com

Definition: Acanthosis Nigricans is a black-brown velvety skin condition on the back of the neck caused by too much insulin in the blood. The skin darkening is usually first seen during pre-adolescence and adolescence years. High insulin levels in the blood can lead to diabetes and other chronic health problems such as obesity, high blood pressure, and heart problems. Early detection and treatment may help delay or prevent the health problems associated with high insulin levels. Many child care centers and schools are now screening for this condition.
