What is Acanthosis Nigricans?

By , About.com Guide

Question: What is Acanthosis Nigricans?

Answer: Acanthosis Nigricans is a black-brown velvety skin condition on the back of the neck caused by too much insulin in the blood. The skin darkening is usually first seen during pre-adolescence and adolescence years. High insulin levels in the blood can lead to diabetes and other chronic health problems such as obesity, high blood pressure, and heart problems. Early detection and treatment may help delay or prevent the health problems associated with high insulin levels. Many child care centers and schools are now screening for this condition.

Treatment usually consists of dietary changes and an increase in physical activity. The food guide pyramid suggests that people should eat 3-5 servings of vegetables and 2-4 servings of fruits every day. Encouraging your child to eat a variety of foods that are low in calories and exercise for 20-30 minutes 3-5 times a week will improve his or her overall health and well-being. The key to having healthy living habits is having a daily routine with family involvement.
