Now is a Great Time to Teach/Remind Kids About Fire Safety

From Robin McClure, About.com GuideOctober 2, 2009

The month of October is traditionally Fire Prevention Month and serves as a much-needed reminder to teach or remind your kids about fire safety.  Many daycares and schools plan field trips to fire stations or bring firefighters to talk about fire safety tips, and many fire stations plan community open houses as well.   Kids need to not only know what to do in case of a fire, but not to do as well, and also where to go in the unlikely event they need to evacuate their house or building due to a fire.

Safety in general is an important topic for kids to learn about. Fire safety is definitely an area worth raising awareness about with kids. Teaching children about fire safety (or any other safety issue) also impresses upon parents that teachers/caregivers do care about the best interests of their children.

Fire safety can be a fun and educational opportunity at a child care setting. We happen to have a dad that is a fireman at our child care center and he is VERY good with children. So, he came in and talked with our preschool children. They all loved him and he presented important fire safety information in a way that they would remember. They also got to see their teacher get dressed up in REAL fireman “garb”. It was a blast!
