The Joyful Connection Between Kids and Music
Wednesday December 17, 2008
Your kids can't help to be surrounded by music this time of year. Most daycare centers and schools have been teaching holiday songs, and many have planned performances to coincide with Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and even the approaching new year! Research clearly shows that music can enrich and positively influence our lives, so go ahead and encourage your tots to sing their lil' hearts out this holiday season!

My middle-school son is an upright bass player. We have noticed that, if he is having a bad day, he literally wraps himself around his bass and plays his concerns away. It seems that the vibrations from those low tones really touch his soul. It’s such a shame that music programs are always one of the first programs to be cut when budgets get tight. Not only are they wonderful from an educational point of view, but, in my son’s day, his orchestra is his relief from the rest of his classes. Hopefully all children can continue to enjoy music in their school programs on a regular basis. (and, no, I’m not a music educator; just a convinced parent!)
