Creating Political Awareness in Kids

From Robin McClure, About.com Guide   August 29, 2008

Whether you're Republican, Democrat, or undecided, everyone will have to agree that this year's Presidential election promises to be an exciting and a historic first. That's why there is no better time than right now to teach kids--even young ones--about our election process. While children may not want to sit and watch hours of convention coverage, they may find the basic facts, including party names, names of candidates, and even the party symbols, more interesting than you might think. Some daycare centers and schools are even planning to have mock elections and celebrate the act of democracy--regardless of the outcome. My 10-year-old found it incredulous that no black American or female has ever been president or vice president. Her words? "It's about time!" I couldn't agree more.
