Many Young Children Spend Long Hours in Child Care
Thursday April 7, 2005
Joni Levine with the Child Care Lounge sent me a heads-up about a recently-released report from the Urban Institute . This interesting study finds that half of children age 5 and younger with moms working full-time spend at least 35 hours a week being cared for by others. It also finds that high-income families use the most child care.
These findings emphasize how important a role child care plays in the lives of America's families. Recent research on early childhood development has found that children's activities can profoundly affect their later academic and social outcomes.
